Dover Dive - 24 June 2018

Sunday 24th June saw our first Dive trip out of Dover Marina.

The sun shone on 10 divers at they set off, 6 on the “Black Cat” Dive catamaran and 4 on the rib “Blue Dragon” and we reached our dive site within 45 minutes, calm seas and sunshine prevailed.

The first was the wreck of the SS Leicester, a 73-meter cargo ship which sank after hitting a sea mine in 1916. Having great visibility, we made our decent down the shot line where we found her lying in around 25 meters of water, and still quite intact. Swimming around the wreck we found plenty of marine life and remnants of her cargo, folks, spoons, and crockery to investigate. Approximate dive time 35 minutes.

After a surface interval with tea and cakes we headed back inshore towards Dover Marina to our second dive site at Shakespeare’s Bay, this dive was planned to be a drift along the coast line. Dropping into 8 meters of water we yet again found an abundance of marine life, dogfish, starfish, spider and brown crabs, and hiding under the rocks, lobsters.

Because of the shallow depth we had a nice long drift where we found ourselves quite a way down the coast. Approximate dive time 40 minutes.

After all the divers were picked up and back on board their respective boats, the two skippers raced each other back to the marina, was good fun.

More snacks were provided by Paul & Sue Polain, as we all chatted over our great day out diving and we are definitely looking forward to returning.
