It’s all David’s fault!
David Kendrick-White is my son-in-law and, back in 2012 before we all headed off to the Caribbean for a family holiday, he suggested I learnt to scuba dive. I’ve kept tropical fish since I was a teenager and he realised that I’d enjoy seeing fish in their natural habitat far more than in an aquarium. How right he was!
I completed my PADI Open Water Referral here in the UK and then qualified on that holiday in Riviera Maya, Mexico. A few days later and I was experiencing the thrill of two swift drift dives along a coral wall off Cozumel. The amount of beautiful fish, large and small, and the variety of colourful corals were simply amazing. I was hooked.
Since then, I have enjoyed diving in a wide range of other countries and environments; Egypt, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Madeira, Cape Verde and Jamaica. Most people think of diving as a holiday pastime – something for warm, tropical waters, but there are great diving opportunities here in the UK too – luscious reefs and a huge number of historical wrecks waiting to be explored. I’ve enjoyed diving around the south coast with DiveMania on day boats sailing from Brighton, Swanage and Plymouth.

On these I have seen colourful blue wrasse fish and free swimming clams, explored amphibious tanks that sank in mock landings prior to D-Day and ships sunk by U-boats in both World Wars. I have dived with a wide range of people from across continents and cultures - making memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. And I have taken my love of photography underwater too – helping to capture and share sights that most people never see.
I have been back to Egypt five times so far – including four Liveaboard holidays with DiveMania Scuba which have all proved to be a great fun way to maximise my dive experiences. These are holidays spent entirely afloat, sailing from one location to another, pampered by the crew, fed by onboard chefs, diving three or four times a day with the occasional opportunity to dive at night, discovering nocturnal underwater wildlife. I’ve also travelled to the Maldives with DiveMania, diving with oceanic reef sharks, nurse sharks, manta rays, spinner dolphins and looking for whalesharks.
I’m looking forward to a number of the many varied diving trips DiveMania are running this year. Have you looked? There’s something for every level of diver - even newly qualified Open Water divers.
DiveMania Scuba have been there for me over the last five years, providing excellent training, social activities, dive trips and holidays. They’ve helped me develop and refine my diving skills from the basics, through most of the PADI Speciality courses and moving on to achieve my Master Scuba Diving rating. Then, under their expert tuition and mentoring, I qualified as a PADI Divemaster – the first rung of the professional diving ladder. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping others as they learn how to safely experience the same thrill of seeing the underwater world for themselves.
