My parents bought me the PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience for my tenth birthday present and I had my first attempt very soon afterwards. I absolutely loved it and immediately told my parents I wanted to try it again.

I qualified as a Junior Open Water Diver as soon as I could and then went on to dive every time my family went away on holiday. I worked through the qualifications systematically as a teenager, taking every opportunity to plunge back into the water and eventually qualified as an Open Water Scuba Instructor.

I often wonder what motivation people have to do a particular sport or hobby and find myself being asked why I enjoy Scuba Diving so much…my answer, quite simply, is the peacefulness. Hovering weightlessly above a Moray Eel, watching Clownfish circle endlessly around a piece of coral, taking pictures of an Octopus and then swimming slowly to the boat for a short trip back to the hotel for the evening meal is my ideal holiday.

I have travelled and dived around the Caribbean, visiting Cuba a few times, Margarita, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Mexico, Kenya, Menorca, Spain and Egypt. My honeymoon a few years ago was spent in Egypt for a month where my wife and I completed over 60 dives each!

The second question instructors are often asked is why we want to teach. Unfortunately I can’t give the same answer as before; it is definitely not peaceful! I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when a student finishes their pool training, or has succeeded in an exam or simply put their face under the water for the first time and knowing that they wouldn’t have done it without you. So we come to my last question of why someone should learn to dive. I can’t give you an answer, I can only offer an insight into my experience of loving every minute and you probably will too!

My question to everyone reading is…Why haven’t you started with us already?
