Scuba diving… some would say that I was thrown in at the deep end but I think it’s more accurate to say that I was tricked into doing it. On one of our first dates, my boyfriend showed me some of his PADI manuals and persuaded me to do a discover scuba session in the local pool. Having done it once, and with a family holiday booked the next year, I decided to enrol on the Open Water course. Although I enjoyed diving in the warm swimming pool I could not see myself doing it in cooler temperatures. So, off we went to sunny Hurghada, Egypt to do the four dives necessary for certification as an Open Water diver.
From then onwards I haven’t really stopped! My boyfriend, by now my husband, was diving all the time and I felt I was missing out. So I decided to buy a dry suit and finally convinced myself that UK diving was also worthwhile.
I completed various courses leading up to Rescue Diver and thought my journey would stop there. However, after a few cunning conversations on my husband’s part I found myself starting my Divemaster course! Assistant Instructor was next which led to where I am now - an Open Water Scuba Instructor.
Having completed more than 250 dives I thought I was well-prepared for this professional rating. I’ve been able to dive in Egypt, various countries of the Caribbean and South America and increased my dive count in the UK. I particularly enjoyed being around and helping with courses but now certified as an Instructor I am looking forward to teaching people to scuba dive and to continue their dive education.
Although I have been at an advantage, considering how involved my husband, David, has been, this is truly a hobby in which it is so easy to become carried away with the thrill of it. I hope scuba diving is something we can introduce you to and start you on a journey as exciting as mine has been!
